Reading Between The IT Lines – Issue #1

Welcome! Let’s do a quick round of all the movers and shakers of IT and see what we come up with. As usual a lot is happening and some of it is really great to know – so let’s get in the know:

EUC

Microsoft has been making  a lot of noise recently around the public preview (docs) of their upcoming DaaS service (WVD). Product teams showed it in action (What is Windows Virtual Desktop) and created a quickstart guide (Quick getting started guide). Community/media has been active about this as well (link, link).

And a bit about the big elephant in the WVD room, Citrix. Rob explains how Citrix will add value and Claudio thinks that Citrix messed it up. (link)

One of the announced perks of WVD (but not limited to WVD) is that FSLogix will become available to almost anyone dealing with EUC. Christiaan with yet another great overview here. (Link)

Azure

Nutanix has a new competitor, as Microsoft announces the Azure Stack HCI. (Link)

Last thing about Azure. Azure Backup for SQL Server running on Azure Virtual Machines became generally available to backup all your DBs that are still running inside managed VMs. (Link)

VMware

How much value is there for VMware from their partnership with AWS? Surprisingly, not a lot (link)
I still think that most of the value goes to AWS in this case.

Security

Hackers hijacked ASUS software updates to send malware to ASUS computers owners. (Link)

A team of security researchers hacked a Tesla Model 3 car. (Link)

Cloud

There is a new Amazon S3 Storage Class – Glacier Deep Archive, which aims to finally make backup tape drives obsolete – or any sort of on-prem backup. (Link)

And what if AWS is our modern day Windows (when compared to Kubernetes and Linux, respectively). (Link)

Yet another example of what happens when Amazon see money running out of their platform, and might be an important milestone in the OSS<>Cloud relationship. (Link)
